From the sun-soaked sands of Rajasthan to the charming coastal town of Deauville in Normandy, France, Bata "भूरजी" (Mona) has walked a remarkable path, inspiring countless people along the way. A proud alumna of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ajmer (1989-1996), Bata’s journey is a captivating story of resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to social change. 🌍 Her life has touched hearts, brought forth hidden stories, and broken barriers. With her camera, she has painted pictures of hope and justice, all while holding true to her Navodayan spirit of kindness, curiosity, and community. 🌟
Growing Up with Purpose: Childhood at The Barefoot College 🌱
Bata’s story begins at The Barefoot College campus in Tilonia, Ajmer, where she spent her early years enveloped by a culture of social service and learning. Her father, Mr. Bhanvar Gopal Pawar, a talented photographer and film editor, and her mother, a steadfast believer in the power of education, raised Bata and her four sisters with the dream that they would become independent and fearless women. 💪 Her mother, though educated only up to the fifth grade, encouraged her daughters to embrace education and explore the world without limitations.
Growing up in this environment had a profound impact on Bata "भूरजी", who was surrounded by the Barefoot College’s values of community upliftment, empowerment, and sustainability. She absorbed these ideals wholeheartedly, becoming inspired by the college’s leaders and activists. It was here that the seeds of her own dreams—to make a meaningful impact and amplify the voices of the marginalized—took root. 🌱
Navodaya Days: A Foundation for Greatness 🏫✨
At JNV Ajmer, Bata "भूरजी" found a place where her potential could flourish. As one of the students in the early years of Navodaya’s mission, she embraced the rigorous academics, formed close friendships, and experienced the support of mentors who nurtured her ambition. She dreamed of joining the Indian Armed Forces and pursued it with determination. Bata even reached the SSB Board in Allahabad, but narrowly missed the final merit list.
Although disappointed, Bata’s resilience shone through, and she resolved to contribute in new ways. Her time at Navodaya had not only fueled her love for service but also strengthened her resolve to bring change in any way she could. 🕊️
First Steps in Her Career: Advocacy, Journalism, and the Early Lessons 📸
After graduating, Bata "भूरजी" began her career as an Account Executive in Jaipur, learning the ropes of business and organization. But her drive to serve society took her beyond the corporate world. In 2002, she joined ElectionWatch, an NGO focused on electoral reforms. Here, Bata’s innate passion for advocacy began to flourish. Her work required her to engage with the community, observe their struggles, and understand the vital role that transparent governance plays in society. 👩🏫
This exposure was just the beginning. In 2004, Bata’s journey came full circle as she returned to The Barefoot College, now as a Photographer and Short Filmmaker. Working alongside stalwarts like Ms. Aruna Roy and Mr. Bunker Roy, Bata was tasked with capturing India’s most pressing social issues. Her camera became a tool for storytelling, and her work brought visibility to significant campaigns such as the Right to Information (RTI), Right to Work (MNREGA), and Right to Food initiatives. 📷 Her visuals didn't merely show scenes—they carried stories that moved people to care, to act, and to change.
